News agencies prove the largest asset in reducing illegal street racing! Source: Research Department Capturing the incidence of illegal street racing has proven a huge challenge to governments, law enforcement, and governing institutions. As a result of these bodies being unable, or in most cases, unwilling to implement the needed changes to document and track the problem most information is derived via “none-official” means. Much of what is known about illegal street racing occurrences, accidents, and legislation is as a direct result of the hard working news agencies across the world. Had the media not taken an interest in covering this illegal activity the populace would be largely oblivious that it occurs. Illegal street racing would be categorized into broader traffic categories such as speeding and accidents would be attributed to incidental driver error. As of a result of the media endeavoring to cover the illegal street racing problem the world is quickly learning that it is as detrimental, if not more, than drunk driving. Both a drunk driver and an illegal street racer engage in a driving manner which they know is dangerous yet exercise no care in stopping. The defining difference between the two illegal activities is a drunk driver is easily identified through blood alcohol tests whereas an illegal street racer is far more challenging to identify. A drunk can’t deny the outcome of a blood alcohol test; however, an illegal street racer can easily deny that s/he was not racing illegally. As the media and the efforts of associations similar to Evo Street Racers and Beat The Heat work to educate the public on defining, reporting, and proposing solutions to illegal street racing it will become easily identifiable when the act is being committed. In consequence of educated witnesses/law enforcement illegal street racers denials will hold far less weight in the judicial system. With time as the populace understands how lethal and frequent the activity occurs they will apply pressure on policy makers. In reaction to the demand of their constituents the policy makers will create legislation and request assistance from private enterprises to reduce the problem. As a populace we must make every effort to apply pressure to the decision makers responsible for speeding up the process. Every day that passes less action results in lost lives, property damage, and interruption to our peaceful existence. Media traditionally only covers topics that is essential and appealing to their target audience. Next time you encounter illegal street racing in the media please take the effort to express gratitude for covering the topic. In taking this additional simple effort to indicate preference the media’s awareness to the topic will be heightened as they make a larger effort to cover the topic. As a team with a single vision and one goal we take action, save lives, and end the senseless tragedies. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Related Articles
