1st Annual Rusty Bridges Street Car Challenge Is BUSTED BY THE POLICE!

Source: Communications Department
Release Date: January 25, 2010
Update / Revision: N/A

A thief stealing from the local mall doesn’t notify the vendor of his intentions previous to committing the illegal act…  It doesn’t require an advanced college degree to understand that broadcasting an illegal activity previous to the act can result in law enforcement to actively monitor the situation…yet illegal street racers continue to defy logic with their poor decisions.  One such example is the “1st Annual Rusty Bridges Street Car Challenge,” an illegal street race in Tennessee.

The organizers of the illegal race utilized public internet forums such as “street car forums” to promote and advertise the event.   They shared information standard to sanctioned racing including fees, racing brackets, times, locations, rules etc.   Their effort to gain visibility for the illegal event was so successful that it not only attracted participants from neighboring states but also gained the attention of multiple branches of law enforcement.

Illegal street racing in Chattanooga has been a persistent problem for it citizens for well over a decade.  Law enforcement has made every effort in reducing the problem and has even gone beyond the badge with efforts like their Beat the Heat program.  Unfortunately their efforts have been largely ignored by the media and local governments; however, this was all to change when the illegal street racers took it one step further when declaring a money and trophy illegal race on the same streets that law enforcement is sworn to protect.

Instead of seeking immediate arrest warrants law enforcement monitored the situation from the race inception, the day of illegal competition, and to the actual sting.  Throughout the process law enforcement learned invaluable information relating to the huge scope of the illegal street racing community, the key organizers, habits and behaviors of the illegal act, and cataloged all the participants.

It was the result of interagency cooperation and astute officers such as Joe Warren and many other undercover officers which resulted in one of America’s most successful illegal street racing raids.  None of the illegal street racing competitors were injured, no law enforcement was injured, no accidents occurred, four arrests were rendered, critical information and videos were secured, and the community/public officials are now fully cognizant and engaged into reducing the problem.  Perhaps the most important affect the sting had on the illegal street racing community was assisting in evolving many of participants into motorsports racers.  As stated in posts on the same forum which initiated the investigation (Street Car Forums):

In support of some really good friends, Jackhammer being one. I am quitting street racing and do not condone it any longer. I have for many years and inlight of recent happenings I had decided to call it quits on the street. There is a time and a place and it is never truely safe on the streets at anytime.

Bobby_Bullet:
Thats what you get when you post it on a public forum. There is other ways to do it than posting a streetcar challenge all over the forum. They will be watching this forum like a hawk now. They probably are trying to shut down the forum saying its a way to get street racers together. Kinda hurts the ones that dont.

Bmidd:
That's the way to do it. Too many horror stories about people getting hurt on the street. What do you think would happen to the "organizer" of all this street racing if someone got killed at this event on the highway? You can bet your ass you will be hauled into court and charged with manslaughter or even murder. Keep pushing your luck and the law of averages WILL catch up to you, it always does. Plus at Brainerd, there is usually someone there that knows how to properly video tape a race!http://www.streetcarforums.com/images/smilies/aktion.gif
