DENVER  --

When much of the city is sleeping, illegal street racing comes alive. But law enforcement put the brakes on it Sunday night through a joint undercover sting operation.

Denver Police and Adams County Sheriff's deputies arrested 11 people for street racing, 3 others for traffic violations and ticketed 35 juveniles for curfew violations. They also seized 16 vehicles. The bust happened at 50th and Fox Street.

Police say they were alerted to the problem through complaints from people in the area. They say drag racing is very dangerous. "Often times, these speed contests, you have vehicles that are traveling in excess of maybe 100 mph, on a road designed for 35, 45, 50 mph," says Denver Police detective John White.

Lenny Hart, who works on Fox St. says he's seen drag racing for many years, including a race that ended up in one of the cars nearly crashing last year. "They got pretty close, [the cars] side by side. One gentleman lost it, went into the curb here, bounced up over the curb and almost rolled it," he says.

He even called police once. He says he's worried about the kids killing themselves by plowing into one of the many parked tractor trailers on the quiet, industrial street.

Each of the street racing suspects is facing a misdemeanor.
