Six people were taken to hospital late Tuesday night following a car crash involving three vehicles, two of which were allegedly street racing in an east-end neighbourhood.

Toronto police were called to the intersection of Lawrence Avenue East and Midland Avenue in Scarborough around 9:30 p.m. after two cars were seen going through a red light, Const. Wendy Drummond said Wednesday.

While running the red light, one of the cars hit a third car that was crossing the intersection on a green light.

She would not reveal how fast the vehicles were going, but confirmed that they were seen "racing."

Six people were taken to a nearby hospital for minor injuries.

No charges have been laid in the collision.

Last year, Ontario enacted new legislation to crack down on street racing in the province. Under the new law, a person can be criminally charged, have their licence suspended and have their car impounded if they are caught driving 50 km/h more than the posted speed limit.

In January, an 85-year-old man was caught driving 161 km/h on a highway north of Toronto.

He was the oldest person ever charged under the street racing law.
