Police believe street racing may have been behind a frightening accident that closed down a major intersection for two hours Tuesday and left a pedestrian hurt, a woman shaken and a driver facing serious charges.

It happened outside a McDonald's restaurant on Lawrence near Midland around 12:30pm. Investigators say a black Honda and a white car were allegedly going at excessive speeds down the street, as a woman in a van was trying to make a left turn. She was T-boned by the darker vehicle as the other car sped away from the scene.

"I heard the screaming tires and I looked and you could see the van turning into McDonald's," recalled witness Fred Clark. "And all you hear is bang."

"The guy was flying," Clark continued. "He had to be doing 80 to 100 (kilometres an hour)."

The vehicles then hit a 20-year-old pedestrian, who was walking past the area at the time on his way to the eatery.

Police have now charged the man behind the wheel of the Honda, a 23-year-old, with dangerous driving causing bodily harm and criminal negligence.

"I thought it was going to be a fatality when I first got here," admitted Toronto Police Const. Jason Jones.

The van driver, a 37-year-old woman, was badly shaken up by the experience and understandably so. Her vehicle contains a child's seat that literally flew through the window and was hanging over the side of her car with the force of the impact. But fortunately, it was unoccupied and there was no youngster riding with her.

Both the pedestrian and the woman were taken to hospital but their injuries aren't life threatening.

Lawrence Ave. E. was closed for two hours as the probe continued, re-opening just in time for the afternoon rush. Cops are still looking for the other car that may have been involved in the incident and say it should serve as a warning to parents about making sure their child car seats are fastened properly.
