Two men allegedly involved in a street racing accident which resulted in the death of an elderly couple have been charged over the incident.

Police allege the men - a 28-year-old Commodore driver from Hebersham, and a 28-year-old Mazda driver from Glenmore Park - were part of a street race that included a second Commodore on the Great Western Highway last July, which claimed the lives of St Marys couple Alan and Judith Howle.

The couple were minutes from home when two Commodores ploughed into their Toyota Camry on July 29 last year. They were turning right across oncoming traffic when their car was hit.

Mr Howle, 71, was thrown from the car, and Mrs Howle, 70, the driver, was trapped in the wreckage. Both died at the accident site.

The two men have been charged with driving in a dangerous manner, taking part in a road race and negligent driving.

They will appear in Penrith Local Court on March 17.

Senior Sergeant Peter Jenkins of the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit said the two men had been involved in the police investigation from the start.

"There are no further parties to the investigation - all have now been charged," Sergeant Jenkins said.

"I spoke to the victims' family this morning. They were pleased and relieved that the charges had been laid."

Robert James Borkowski, 38, from Claremont Meadows, remains in custody over the incident, on charges including manslaughter and aggravated driving causing death.

Police allege Borkowski was behind the wheel of the second Commodore.
