NORMAL — A man who police said was drag racing with a friend Sunday afternoon on Pipeline Road north of Normal lost control of his vehicle after he crested a hill, crashing into several trees.

Alex McKean, 20, was listed in stable condition after being admitted to OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, a nursing supervisor said. His address was not immediately available.

Sgt Steve Petrilli of the Normal Police Department, said that McKean and Anthony Krisman, 18, of Normal were drag racing at speeds in excess of 100 mph when they crested a hill and saw oncoming traffic about 3 pm. McKean lost control of his vehicle. It struck several trees before coming to rest.

McKean had to be cut out of his vehicle by Normal Fire Department rescue before being transported, Petrilli said.

Police said Krisman fled the scene. He later turned himself and was cooperating with authorties. He was charged with drag racing, aggravated reckless driving and speeding and is being held in the McLean County Jail. Petrilli said McKean would be similarly charged when conditions permit.

An accident reconstruction team worked well into Sunday night at the scene gathering information
