A man racing his car with another vehicle southbound on Roosevelt Boulevard this morning lost control, crossed into oncoming traffic and smashed into four vehicles, killing one of the drivers, authorities said.

Three people also were injured in the 9 a.m. accident just north of Collins Road near Jacksonville Naval Air Station. Police have identified the victim who died as John Robertson “Bobby” Arnold Jr., 61, of Jacksonville. Police said another vehicle struck in the crash was being driven by Arnold’s wife, Jane, 57. She was not injured.

The driver of the car that smashed into the other vehicles was identified as Matthew Henry Borg, 20, of Orange park. He had serious injuries. Borg was charged Monday night with vehicular homicide and two counts of reckless driving, police said.

The accident closed northbound Roosevelt Boulevard for several hours, police said.

Witnesses told police Borg’s white Acura and a blue Mustang were racing down Roosevelt. The Acura, behind the Mustang, went out of control and drove into the grassy median, said Lt. Bill Leeper, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesman.

A witness said the Acura began flipping, went airborne and hit three northbound vehicles. Arnold, driving a Nissan Maxima, died at the scene. Three other people, including the Acura driver, were hospitalized. Two are in serious condition, Leeper said.

Also injured in the accident were Amanda Ingram, 19, and Frances Foss, 78, both of Orange Park. Ingram had serious injuries, while Foss’s injuries were minor. They were driving separate vehicles.

Other cars struck in the accident were driven by Jane Arnold and Pelilia Idio, 48, of Orange Park.

It’s unknown if the two drivers in the racing cars knew each other or were chasing each other.Authorities are searching for the blue Mustang, which continued south on Roosevelt Boulevard. It is said to be a model from about 2000. Anyone with information can call the Highway Patrol at .
