MOUNT PLEASANT — A man was killed and his front-seat passenger critically injured near the Belle Hall shopping center early Thursday when he lost control of his car at more than 80 mph, then skidded and tumbled about two blocks down the road, authorities said.

"We're sure (it was) in excess of 80, it could be more," Mount Pleasant police Sgt. Pat Carter said.

The crash started on Long Point Road near Egypt Road around 2:20 a.m. The 2003 Nissan Maxima was traveling toward the Mark Clark Expressway when it hit a curb. The car ran into a light pole and other objects, then began to flip, ejecting the unrestrained driver in the process, a police report said.

George Michael Elizondo, 21, of Mount Pleasant was pronounced dead at the scene, Charleston County Deputy Coroner Dottie Lindsay said. Police said he likely was thrown through the sun roof.

Andrew Shelton, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered serious head injuries, police said. The 21-year-old from Mount Pleasant was listed in critical condition at Medical University Hospital.

The speed limit on that part of Long Point Road is 45 mph. Police said their initial investigation showed no obvious cause for the crash, aside from the speed.
