
Drag-racing driver dies in Copiague crash

A driver who was drag racing died after he lost control of his car and slammed into a concrete pillar in Copiague, police said Saturday.
Kamilo Dabiowski, 21, of Lindenhurst, was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip following the 11:50 p.m. Friday crash.
Dabiowski, of 655 Center Ave., was driving a 1995 Volks.wagen Jetta east on Oak Street when the accident occurred.
Witnesses told police that the Jetta was racing a similar model Volkswagen. The Jetta struck the pillar, which supports a Long Island Rail Road overpass.
The driver of the second car involved in the drag race did not stop, police said.
Dabiowski's family could not be reached for comment.
Reacting to increasing numbers of drag-racing deaths on Long Island over recent years, the Suffolk County Legislature approved a bill last year authorizing police to seize .racers' cars.
Since then, police say they have taken more than 20 cars and made nearly 30 arrests.
