Alpine Township - The 20 year old woman injured in a street racing crash in Alpine Township died Sunday afternoon.

Amanda McLeod of Newaygo was critically injured in the crash, which happened Tuesday night just before 11pm on Alpine Avenue near Six Mile Road NW.

Authorities say McCleod was driving a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix at an excessive speed. Witnesses told sheriff's deputies she was racing against her boyfriend who has a similar car.

Witnesses say the two knew each other and were stopped at the light when they started racing north up Alpine. Both cars came upon a slower moving car when McCleod lost control of her vehicle.

Sheriff's Deputies aren't sure if a dip in the road caused her to lose control, but the car did knock out a fire hydrant as it rolled over.

McCleod was thrown from her car from the impact. No one else was hurt. Deputies say they questioned the driver of the other racing car after the accident. No charges have been filed.

McCleod was taken to Spectrum Butterworth in critical condition. She was being treated for head injuries she sustained from the crash.

State records show McLeod had a record of speeding.

The Michigan Secretary of State's office says McLeod received her license in 2004. In September of 2006, she was ticketed in Grand Rapids for driving 100 m.p.h. in a 55 m.p.h zone. Records show the state put four points on McLeod's license and issued a driver improvement warning. Two months later, McLeod was involved in a Grandville accident and was ticketed for failure to stop within an assured, cleared distance. She received two more points on her license.
