Illegal drag racers arrested

Johannesburg - Three people, including a teenage boy, have been arrested for taking part in an illegal drag race in Maraisburg, west of Johannesburg, metro police said on Monday.

The drivers of a Volkswagen Golf, a Toyota Conquest and a Volkswagen Polo attempted to escape from metro police during Sunday night's illegal race, but caused an accident in the process, said spokesperson Wayne Minnaar.

No one was injured.

Police dispersed about 150 spectators at the race.

"The driver of the white Volkswagen Golf was a 17-year-old boy. His mother had to come to the scene to give permission for the car to be towed away," said Minnaar.

The three were due to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on charges of reckless driving and taking part in an illegal speed race.

Metro police warned that they would step up efforts to clamp down on illegal drag racing in Johannesburg.
