UNITY TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A late-night car accident that killed two students from the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg may have been the result of a street race, according to state police. The crash happened at about 10:45 p.m. Thursday in the 1600 block of Route 130, near Clark Road, in Unity Township, Westmoreland County. The victims were identified as James Stulga, 19, of Irwin, and Brian Shervin, 19, of Landisville.Police said the driver, Stulga, was speeding and lost control of his car, smashing into some trees. The car was split in half and flipped on its roof.Police said both men were thrown from the car and pronounced dead at the scene.Police do not know if heavy rainfall during the night contributed to the accident. The accident is still under investigation. One witness told police that a yellow Volkswagen Golf GTI was seen possibly racing the victims' Audi A4 on Route 130 just before the crash."We did receive some information that there was racing going on in reference to the crash," Trooper Jeanne Martin said. "We are unable at this point to verify that, so we are asking if anyone has any information about this crash to give us a call at the (Greensburg) barracks."Men's Basketball Head Coach Marcus Kahn taught Stulga in a freshman seminar class."He was very outgoing. A very nice kid," Kahn said. He seemed to be active all over campus from what I knew. He was popular with other students in resident halls."The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg wants students to know their counseling center is open."Our director of counseling is available to talk to students about ways they can deal with this tragedy," said university spokesperson Wendy Mackall.
