LOS ANGELES -- Two people remained hospitalized in grave condition Thursday following a street racing accident in Eagle Rock area of northeast Los Angeles that killed a pregnant woman, a man and a girl.

"Two of the victims are still in grave condition," Sgt. Wayne Guillary of the Los Angeles Police Department's Northeast Station said early Thursday morning.

Guillary said the female victim, identified only as Cristin, was 20 years old and appeared to be late in her pregnancy. He said the younger female appeared to be between 12 and 16 years old. The male who died at the scene was about 20.

The accident in the 1800 block of West Colorado Boulevard, near Highland View Avenue, was reported just after 11 p.m. Wednesday, he said.

A pregnant woman driving a sedan carrying four others was apparently racing another a car just before the sedan slammed into a tree, Guillary said.

Three victims were declared dead when firefighters arrived at the location -- the pregnant woman, a girl in the back seat of the car, and a man who was ejected from the vehicle, he said. Their names were not immediately released.

Two males -- the ones who survived but are in critical condition -- were also ejected from the vehicle and taken to a hospital, Guillary said.

"This is the grisly, gruesome result of a street race that started long before this collision," LAPD Lt. John Romero said at the scene.

A 19-year-old man, believed to be a driver of a car involved in the street race, was arrested, Guillary said.

Guillary said some witnesses at the scene said a third vehicle tried to avoid the crash and was also involved in the accident, but fled after the crash. He said that driver was not wanted, but police wanted to talk to him or her.

Toy guns were found outside of the wreck, but Guillary said they do not appear to have any significance in the crash.

Colorado Boulevard remained shut down between Highland View and Hermosa avenues early Thursday morning.
